Naikoon Contracting will not build a boardwalk on the Masset pier or a timber-frame pavilion in the park north of Main Street.

The pier boardwalk instead will be built by Broadwater Industries, a Prince Rupert-based company specializing in marine construction.

The Village of Masset is still considering options for the park pavilion, including deferring it until more funds are available.

Naikoon Contracting won a Village of Masset bid this winter to do pre-construction work on the pier and pavilion projects and developed concept plans for both.

Speaking at a Masset council meeting on Aug. 19, Joshua Humphries, the village’s chief administrative officer, said the pier project would have to be directly awarded to Broadwater Industries in order to be done on budget and on time.

The only alternative was to re-tender a contract, but that would likely cause overages and miss the early September start needed to get the pier work done by a February deadline.

Facing those options, Masset council voted unanimously to directly award the pier project construction to Broadwater Industries, which had submitted a quote under budget.

Funded by a $998,250 tourism grant from the B.C. Destination Development Fund, the pier project will include a pedestrian-only boardwalk that parallels the existing deck on the pier at the south end of Main Street. The boardwalk will feature benches, two viewing shelters, and a kind of fishing-net railing.

With a budget of $360,000, about a third of which is funded by Gwaii Trust, the timber-frame pavilion is planned to go by the new Masset library branch. Its large roof will be designed to shelter outdoor concerts, picnics and events such as Harbour Day.
