Winter is a time of contrasts, even when there is no white snow on the ground. It’s a time of quiet moments alone and joyous celebrations with many. It’s closeness as well as painful reminders of distance. It is so dark right now, a darkness punctuated by the twinkle of Christmas lights, candles on the table, and a flickering fireplace.
Winter is that slow time, the inward time, the time for reflecting and entertaining other possibilities. It can be such a busy time, but try to make it slow. There are plenty of events to join in on, so pick the ones that bring you the most joy.
Tlell is abuzz with the news that we have more households than previously thought. We know this because the Tlell Community Association was a few short delivering the Tlellbucks this year. As of press time, I believe this mistake has been rectified, but if you’re a Tlell resident and don’t find your Tlellbucks, let us know!
Yes, you get to go check your mailbox! We’re missing that action this year.
Tlellbucks can be redeemed at all our esteemed Tlell businesses: The Gnarly Burl, Crow’s Nest, Sitka Studio, Crystal Cabin, Tlell River and Tackle, Ranch Feeds, and Cococabin!
We want Tlellians to shop locally in Tlell, and thanks to Canada Post, you may not have a choice.
More Tlellians means more Tlellians at the annual Winter Celebration! Pre-pandemic, the Winter Celebration was the cornerstone of Tlellian society. It was the one time the majority of residents would come together to feast and welcome the winter season. It stumbled a bit during the pandemic but is now back in full swing, thanks to numerous Tlelleves.
What’s a Tlellelve? You have to be a resident of Tlell to be one, but if you are and are curious, come to the Fairgrounds on Thursday evening (December 19) to help decorate and earn your Tlellelve stripes.
For all Tlell residents, come to the Winter Celebration at the Fall Fairgrounds on December 22, starting at 5:30 p.m. Decorate with your fanciest place settings and get ready to welcome Santa! Bring a dish to share—hams, turkeys, and potatoes will be provided. Dress warmly!
The TCA also wishes to invite Tlellians and friends to come back to the Fall Fairgrounds to ring in the New Year! Again, bring a dish to share (it’s the Tlellian way), and enjoy a bonfire, fireworks, music, and dancing with yours truly, DJ Janet Planet.
Gratitude to Gwaii Trust for funding our winter activities! The support received from Gwaii Trust also makes it possible to distribute Christmas hampers to those neighbours who could use them this year. Contact us if you wish to suggest someone in need confidentially.
In the weeks to come, honour your quiet, and also honour coming together. Community events are the way we care for each other and connect. They are times when children learn about helping and getting to know the people of their community. They are the lifeblood and, well, just generally a good time.
Hope to see all Tlellians there! And Happy Holidays to all Islanders near and far!
