Getting to know us
So, who are we? We are Stacey Brzostowski and Andrew Hudson — two locals who have both reported on island before. Why do this? People tell us they miss having a newspaper on Haida Gwaii. Even in 2024, a newspaper can help people to connect and find out what’s going on. We think local news is a great thing, especially when it’s fair, fact-checked, and full of context. A local newspaper was badly missed in the early days of COVID-19 when everyone was stuck at home, and the north/south bubble grew stronger than ever. It’s missing now, when Haida title is being recognized, our hospitals need more staff, and the GidGalang Kuuyas Naay Breakers have made basketball history. Haida Gwaii also has a surprising number of stories that are just plain fun to read. They could be about a nude fishing accident, why the pine marten are fat, or a 42,000-year-old walrus skull found in a windstorm on North Beach. For a small place, we also have some wildly talented cartoonists, photographers, and contributing writers. Haida Gwaii News will also have an opinion page welcoming 500-word pieces by elected leaders. Our biggest goal for our first year and beyond is to stay alive. We will need help, whether writing for us, advertising with us, sending photos, or reading a couple of stories, before you chuck the Haida Gwaii News in the wood stove. It’s okay! It makes great kindling. Haawa, háw’aa
