Masset Library opens new branch on Hodges Avenue

The Masset Library has officially opened its new location at 1700 Hodges Avenue, marking a fresh chapter in a story of community libraries that began more than a century ago. The opening celebration was scaled back out of respect for a recent passing in Skidegate, but the event still carried a strong sense of accomplishment and pride.

Staff from Vancouver Island Regional Library (VIRL) spoke about the importance of the new branch and the years of work it took to bring the project to completion. They thanked partners, including the Village of Masset, Old Massett Village Council, and the Province of B.C., noting the collaboration that made the project possible.

A highlight of the opening was hearing from Jaasljuus Yakgujanaas and Dr. Jasḵwaan Bedard, who represented the Xaad Kíl Language Hub. They spoke about the significance of having a welcoming space where learners can gather, study, and practice the Xaad Kíl language. They also thanked VIRL for reaching out to the Old Massett Village Council during the planning phase, saying the inclusion of the program’s needs helped make the new branch a place where cultural learning can flourish.

The new facility blends modern design with local culture, with a roof pitch, timber beams, and vertical cedar siding that honour Haida traditions and the Masset community. Inside, the branch offers a learning space focused on language and technology, a cozy fireplace lounge, and an open library with comfortable reading and study areas. Other features include a bright children’s area, a shared meeting room, and expanded hours with more programming to support community engagement.

The Masset branch also carries forward a long history of library services in the community, which began in 1912 in homes and schools, before moving into the log building in 1980 and joining VIRL in 1983.

A much-anticipated puppet show, created in partnership between VIRL branch staff and community members, will be performed in the near future. The collaborative production has already drawn excitement and is expected to be a performance not to be missed.
