Gidgalang Kuuyas Naay School students are joining Haida Gwaii News through a partnership that has been a long time coming. The newsroom has hoped to include youth voices since the paper was first launched. This year, the idea took shape when teacher Marci Malloy reached out with interest in helping make it real. Working with fellow teacher Miss Ono, she brought together a group of nearly a dozen students who were excited to take part.
Their work will appear in a new section, temporarily called GKNS Chronicle (until the group agrees on a name), where students can share what life on Haida Gwaii looks like from their point of view. The section will include stories about school life, community experiences, personal observations and creative pieces that show the world through the eyes of local youth. It also gives students a chance to learn how journalism works and to build skills in writing, interviewing and storytelling.
Some of their submissions will appear in this edition for the first time, with more to come as students develop their ideas and learn the publishing process. The early drafts already show strong curiosity and a clear sense of what matters to them. Readers can expect thoughtful pieces, humour and honest reflections on growing up in a small island community.
Haida Gwaii News is grateful to the teachers who helped form the group and to the students who stepped forward to shape the start of this project and bring a new and important voice to the paper.
