B.C.’s minimum wage rose to $17.40 an hour on June 1, up 65 cents from $16.75 an hour.
The 3.9% increase matches the average B.C. inflation rate in 2023.
According to the province, the change will raise the wages of about 240,000 workers who previously earned less than $17.40 an hour.
Starting in 2016, the B.C. government has adjusted the minimum wage every year to match inflation.
B.C. now has the highest minimum wage of any Canadian province.
Ontario’s minimum wage, which is also adjusted and indexed to inflation, will rise to $17.20 in October. Quebec’s is $15.75 an hour, while Alberta’s has remained at $15 an hour since 2018.
