My heart is with the family members and community who are experiencing loss. Legacy is the lessons they have left for us…
The best thing I heard this week was from a long-time friend—the kind that you’re always happy to hear from when they call to catch up.
It’s wrong to totally avoid the topic of politics when it seems like there are some important issues to know at least a bit about. Apathy is boring. That was a sticker you might see on the laptop of a fellow student when I was in college. Also in those days, we were very critical of where we consumed our media—a thought I believe is relevant to revisit today.
So, talking politics with this friend, he tells me: I’m an independent and not tied to any political ideology. He had the words to easily get in the lane of what my thought was in the moment.
Another big takeaway from political debate this week is how intense and passionate it can be. I love it, honestly. It is the passion of each individual that will make any kind of collective change—the kind that will have a positive global impact.
If we remember back not too long ago, where did the phrase “If you’re not with us, you’re against us” come from? Is that what selling a Tesla looks like right now?
To have an intense opinion, it should be an informed one. An opinion based off headlines was where I was, with my understanding of what is happening in the world today. I’ve started to pull the thread of independent media and reporting, and funding, and fact-checking. I wanted to make sure that my opinion wasn’t going to be based on other opinions.
There have been large spans of time since moving back to Haida Gwaii that I have not looked at the world beyond the four walls of my house, and whatever activity the kids wanted to get up to. Getting outside and not thinking about anything else but exactly where you are. If that was political apathy, it was not boring.
Politics discussed among friends is a way to be close. I encourage the conversation, and look forward to the conversation continuing.
It has been my pleasure to be on the south end a bit these past few weeks… PSA: Blacktail is open.
Edi and team were a well-oiled machine right from the kickoff of the season. The pork bites were my favourite thing so far insert drooling emoji.
Last but not least, Junior All Native Basketball! Whoa! CFNR had a live feed for the games on their website, and for some of them it showed the scoreboard continuously. I appreciated it so much.
Big haw’aa for all the work that goes into the tournament. U13 Saints had Asher #4, Cohen #9, and I want to give such a big haawa, haw’aa to the coaches, organizers and team for having them. It was so fun to watch. All of you have really levelled up since I last watched you play. Working together on a team with players that meet up just for this tournament is such a fun opportunity. Everyone I’ve talked to has been so proud of our young players. Walk tall, JANT players—I look forward to cheering for you all again soon.
Independent media are gems to our communities. If you haven’t visited your local library recently, go in. You can ask for help setting up the Libby app, where you can access the selection of audiobooks, etc. Send in your community events to the Haida Gwaii Newspaper—the section at the back. Let’s look there for upcoming events!
