Big Fish, Bigger Smiles at Sandspit’s 72nd Annual Coho Derby

The 72nd Annual Sandspit Coho Derby, which ran from September 13th to October 5th, brought out anglers from near and far in a celebration of fishing and community. The event’s leaderboard tells the story of some impressive catches this year.

Top honors for the biggest overall fish went to Shain Olson, who landed a 12-pound, 7-ounce coho. Chris Putterill and Bev Collinson followed closely behind, each also pulling in fish over 12 pounds. On the junior side, Robert Houston took the top junior title with an 7-pound catch followed by Jack Houston with 5-pound, 7 ounce fish . Among the ladies, Bev Collinson led the pack with the 12-pound fish.

The derby wasn’t just about the competition; it was a chance for the community to come together, share stories, and enjoy the spirit of the catch. With the final weigh-ins complete and the winners celebrated, this year’s Sandspit Coho Derby will surely be remembered as a highlight of the season.
