The Tlell River was a stream of yellow on Saturday as all 1,500 ducks in the second annual Haida Gwaii Duck Race sold out ahead of the main event and it was Jenny Brooks’ duck that crossed the finish line first.
Brooks claimed the $5,000 grand prize, followed by Nadine Wilson in second place with a $500 win, Charie Wilson in third with $350, and Camille Collinson in fourth, taking home $150.
The popular fundraiser supports Grade 7 students from Sk’aadgaa Naay Elementary and Grade 11 students from GidGalang Kuuyas Naay, who are planning a trip to T’aalan Stl’ang.
Spectators packed the roadside through Tlell to watch the race, with a lively atmosphere fuelled by a concession stand serving hamburgers, hotdogs and homemade treats.
In addition to the main event, a 140-duck student-only SNES race saw Emma J. take first place, followed by Kano Cowpar, Coen S., Daala and Tonya Collinson.
“I thought it went really well,” said organizer Dave Wahl. “I really appreciate all the students and families who sold tickets and helped execute the race, and especially appreciate Janine Wilson for leading the entire project. It’s a difficult event to run, and she did an amazing job again this year.”
