Daajing Giids to honour Carol Ives

The Village of Daajing Giids will officially recognize the contributions of longtime resident Carol Ives by naming a local alley in her honour.

At the Sept. 15 regular meeting, Mayor Lisa Pineault explained to council that Megan Romas, Ives’ daughter, had approached her to request the recognition. Pineault said the matter was brought forward now because the community feels she should be acknowledged for her contributions and life in the community.

Councillor Jim LeMottee spoke in support of the motion, noting that he had previously suggested renaming streets and alleys in honour of individuals who helped shape the town. That idea, he said, was never followed up on at the time.

Council approved the motion to rename the currently unnamed alley between Ocean View Drive and 2nd Avenue that runs behind Napa, to Ives Alley. Pineault remarked that the decision carried both symbolic and practical importance, adding that she was glad emergency responders would now be able to locate residents more easily.

Council also directed staff to begin developing a road naming policy to guide any other renaming changes.
