Surrounded by loved ones and supporters, North Coast-Haida Gwaii’s newest MLA, Tamara Davidson, was sworn into office at the B.C. legislature on Nov. 13. Her close friend, Lucy Bell, carried Davidson’s Copper Shield made by Wigaanad during the ceremony marking the momentous occasion. Davidson is one of 49 women now serving in the legislature, making this the first time in history that both Haida representation and a majority of women are present.
Donnie Edenshaw and Cohen Bradley performed a traditional song and drum, welcoming all new MLAs into the legislature. Davidson’s supporters, including her mother and two close friends, attended to witness her historic achievement as the first Haida woman MLA.
The ceremony in Victoria marked a key milestone in Davidson’s political career. Surrounded by family, friends, and colleagues, she took the oath of office, pledging to uphold values of integrity, fairness, and service to her constituents.
During her campaign, Davidson told Haida Gwaii News, “I’m ready to get to work for you and the issues you care about, like housing, reconciliation, health care, and local infrastructure. It’s about making sure you not only get by but get ahead.”
Davidson’s swearing-in is a significant moment in B.C. politics, as she joins a growing number of women advocating for progressive change. As a member of the NDP, Davidson will work alongside her colleagues to address critical issues such as post-pandemic economic recovery, climate action, and social justice reforms.
Her swearing-in offers hope to her constituents, who look forward to her leadership and advocacy in the years ahead. Davidson’s commitment to listening to her community and amplifying their voices will be central to her legislative work. “I am humbled and honoured to represent all the people of North Coast- Haida Gwaii. I am ready to get to work with my fellow MLA’s on the important issues for all people of British Columbia,” She said in a Facebook post.
