Haida Gwaii doctors offer on-island vasectomy services

Men on Haida Gwaii can now access vasectomy services on island, eliminating the need to travel hundreds of kilometres for the procedure.

Until now, patients were required to leave Haida Gwaii for a surgery that typically takes about 20 minutes, often involving ferries or flights, time off work, childcare arrangements, and winter travel risks.

The service is being offered at Haida Gwaii Hospital and Health Centre in Daajing Giids by a team of local physicians and nurses.

“People need to look at a map to understand how hard it can be to get care here,” said family physician Dr. John Barnhill. “We are talking about ferries, flights, days away from home and work, and for many people, a reluctance to leave their land. Having care close to home is about equity.”

More than 20 vasectomies and dozens of related consultations have been completed over the past two years, saving patients significant travel costs and time.

The program was developed with funding from the Joint Collaborative Committees, a partnership between Doctors of BC and the provincial government. Support through the Specialist Services Committee allowed physicians to work with Northern Health to secure nursing time, prepare a sterile operating space, and obtain the necessary surgical equipment.

Local providers say the program has strengthened confidence in on-island care and demonstrated what is possible when rural communities are supported to deliver services locally.

The success of the program has led to discussions about expanding minor surgical services on Haida Gwaii, including hand surgery and endoscopy.
