Fowl Play Expected at Tlell River

Hundreds of rubber ducks are set to take the plunge on Saturday, May 24 as the 2nd Annual Haida Gwaii Duck Race kicks off at 5:30 p.m. at the Tlell River.

Organized by the Grade 7 class at Sk’aadgaa Naay Elementary and the Grade 11 class at GidGalang Kuuyas Naay Secondary School, the lively fundraiser promises prizes, food, and fun, all in support of an important cultural cause.

Once released, the numbered ducks will bob and race their way toward the finish line, with cash prizes awaiting the swiftest.

The grand prize winner will take home $5,000, followed by $500 for second place, $350 for third, $150 for fourth, and a $100 prize for the duck that comes in last.

Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased from participating students or community vendors. With only 1,500 ducks in the race, those interested are encouraged to act fast.

Concessions featuring hot dogs, burgers, and baked goods will be available courtesy of the Haida House, adding a tasty touch to the evening.

All proceeds go toward the SNES Grade 7 and GKNSS Grade 11 classes’ upcoming trip to the T’aalan Stl’ang Rediscovery Camp in June 2025, a program that connects youth to Haida culture, language and the natural world through land-based learning.

Last year’s inaugural duck race set a high bar for fun and fundraising. On May 19, 2024, teachers and parent volunteers waded into the chilly waters of the Tlell River to release 1,200 rubber ducks.

A strong breeze blew the ducks against the riverbank early in the race, but quick-thinking students and parents hustled to pitch them back into the main current.

The winning duck, lucky #468, crossed the finish line first, earning a $2,000 grand prize for David Crosby Junior.

Organizers are hoping for smoother sailing (or at least calmer winds) this year, with even more ducks and a bigger prize pot. If nothing else, they promise it’ll be a quacking good time.
