Another CAO search for Daajing Giids

The Village of Daajing Giids is on the lookout again for a new chief administrative officer.

Mike Drake will be leaving the village’s top administrative job in early October. Drake was only recently hired to the role.

The village has had  two CAOs and two interim CAOs since September 2020.

The turnover comes at a time when the Village of Daajing Giids has major projects to manage, including $20 million awarded by the B.C. government last year to build its first wastewater treatment plant.

The village is already recruiting a new manager of public works and an administrative assistant.

    Earthquake lightly felt

A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck south of Haida Gwaii at 3:22 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 15.

The earthquake did not generate tsunami, nor were any expected.

Haida Guardians reported feeling the earthquake at SG̱ang Gwaay. Others reported feeling a shake in Port Clements, Port Hardy, Kitimat and Terrace. The epicentre of the quake was about 39 km southeast of the Cape Saint James lighthouse. The earthquake occurred at a depth of about 10 km.

Earthquakes Canada detected more than 100 small aftershocks the following day, the strongest of which had a magnitude of 4.7.

    Burn bans lifted

All fire bans have been lifted for Haida Gwaii and the rest of the Coastal Fire Centre.
Bans on Category 2 and 3 open fires that started in May were lifted on Wednesday, Sept. 18 after rain and cool weather lowered the risk of wildfire.
Category 2 open fires are larger than a campfire. They involve one or two burn piles no more than two metres high or three metres wide.
Category 3 fires involve a larger burn pile or more than two piles burning at once. While Category 3 fires are now permitted, anyone planning one needs to get a burn registration number by calling 1-888-797-1717.
To report a wildfire using a cellphone, dial *5555.
