Trashed batteries or electronics are likely to blame for starting a fire at the Haida Gwaii landfill on Tuesday, Aug. 27.

No one was injured in the fire, which was reported by someone passing the Islands Solid Waste Landfill north of Port Clements before the landfill opened at 8:30 a.m.

Crews from the Port Clements Volunteer Fire Department managed to put out the blaze.

Daniel Fish, chief administrative officer for the North Coast Regional District, thanked local firefighters for their help and said it was a good reminder for everyone to be careful what they put in the trash and what they recycle.

Batteries and electronics can be dropped off for recycling at the landfill or at the recycling depots in Daajing Giids and Masset.
