Jan 27, Masset council and mayor heard the amendments made to the controversial zoning bylaw. The bylaw was set to have its third reading during regular council on Jan 13 after a public hearing where locals voiced their concerns over Old Masset Village Council’s plans to have the three properties turned into low-income sea can buildings. Council, at that time, tabled the third reading so they had a chance to get more information. ”The biggest objection I heard during that meeting was the sea cans and the volume of people that were going to be on those two sites,” said Josh Humphries CAO of the Village of Masset.
OMVC has changed the scope of their original plans and now will only focus on one of the three proposed rezoned properties and have scrapped the plans to build the sea can buildings. The new focus will be on the one property at 2012 Swan Crescent that currently has a building on site. The plan for the building is to create a women’s shelter that would be a place for women to come after their limited time in the transition house.“It is very much needed in our community,” Humphries told the council. The rezoning bylaw was still required as it would house multiple families, around eight to 12 people. The council passed the third reading and will have the final discussion of the rezoning bylaw 422-2012 at the next scheduled council meeting.
