Dear Annie,
I always love late December, right around Christmas and New Years. Quiet dark days perfect for tea, puzzling and reading by the fire. It’s a real contemplative time for me as I reflect on the year past and begin to think about the next year and everything I want to do. I’m always on the go, a busy kind of person, always taking on new challenges. I was talking with my friends about what great thing I will do next, and they suggested I try doing nothing. Nothing! And that has me really wondering Annie, how do I focus not on achieving something new, but being with myself in life as it is?
- Nothing Next
Dear Nothing Next,
The period around Christmas and New Year’s truly is a magical time, filled with quiet moments that invite reflection and peace. Your description of tea, puzzling, and reading by the fire paints a beautiful picture of tranquility. It’s wonderful to hear that you are always embracing new challenges and staying busy. However, your friends’ suggestion to try doing “nothing” is intriguing and worth exploring. Sometimes, the greatest challenge can be to simply be present and content with where we are in life.
Focusing on being with yourself in life as it is can be incredibly rewarding. Here are a few ideas to help you get started:
- Mindfulness: Practice being fully present in each moment. Whether you’re sipping tea or reading a book, try to immerse yourself completely in the experience without thinking about what comes next.
- Self-Compassion: Be kind to yourself. It’s okay to take a break from constant achievement and just be. Allow yourself to rest and recharge.
- Nature: Spend time outdoors. Nature has a way of grounding us and reminding us of the beauty of simply being.
- Journaling: Write down your thoughts and feelings. This can be a great way to process your experiences and stay connected with yourself.
Remember, doing “nothing” doesn’t mean being idle; it means giving yourself the space to breathe, reflect, and enjoy the present moment. It’s a gift to yourself, allowing you to reconnect with your inner self and find peace in the here and now.
Wishing you a peaceful and contemplative holiday season.
Big Hugs,
Annie
