At its Sept. 3 regular meeting, Daajing Giids council considered Bylaw 170-2025, the Permissive Tax Exemption Bylaw. The bylaw was introduced for first and second reading.
Permissive tax exemption bylaws are required under Section 224 of the Community Charter for council to grant property tax exemptions. The agenda notes this bylaw is at the early stage, as it has passed first and second reading but still requires third reading and adoption before it becomes law. For 2026, the bylaw lists five properties that would be exempt from municipal property taxes, including two owned by the Daajing Giids Heritage Housing Society for low-income family rentals, the Daajing Giids Community Club used as a community hall, the Daajing Giids Thrift Shop Society property used as a thrift store, and the Bethel Assembly property used for church services, housing and parking. These exemptions apply only for the 2026 tax year and must be renewed through bylaw each year.
