A public safety announcement has been issued following reports of alleged drink spiking at several local drinking establishments on Haida Gwaii.
The Islands Wellness Society’s Violence Prevention Program (VAP) confirmed it has received information from multiple community members, from a range of genders, who believe they were targeted while out in the community. The announcement advises residents to use caution when attending social venues and to monitor their drinks closely.
According to the notice, people who suspect their drink has been tampered with may experience lowered inhibitions, difficulty concentrating or speaking, loss of balance, blurred vision, memory loss, blackouts, confusion, or feelings of fear and paranoia. Physical symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, hallucinations, or in severe cases, unconsciousness.
The advisory encourages community members to protect their drinks, trust their instincts, and seek medical attention if they notice sudden changes in how they feel. People are also urged to report incidents to the establishment where it occurred and to contact victim services for confidential support.
The notice outlines several safety suggestions, including avoiding going out alone, declining drinks from strangers, and never leaving drinks unattended. The VAP program is encouraging anyone who experiences or witnesses drink spiking to reach out for assistance.
Victim Services can be contacted by text at 250 893 7045.
The Islands Wellness Society says the alert is precautionary but important, as drink spiking incidents often go unreported. The organization is reminding residents that drink tampering can affect people of any gender and that early reporting helps improve community safety.
