Public Works Roundup: Water, Roads, Parks

Village of Daajing Giids Public Works reports steady progress across water, sewer, parks, roads, and development files as the village heads into fall and prepares for winter operations.

Public Works says staff are continuing hands-on training to run and maintain the water plant. Heavy August rains made the Honna River unusually cloudy with sediment, so operators adjusted chemical dosing and filter cycles to keep drinking water within safety standards and are still watching conditions as the weather changes. Northern Health inspected the plant and it passed. At Northern Health’s request, the village will complete a full lab analysis this month and send water samples out for testing to confirm results.

On the distribution side, crews are flushing dead-end water lines to maintain water quality.

Sewer work remains on regular maintenance schedules. Pump 2 at lift station 3 tripped on overload and will be replaced, with the faulty unit shipped out for repair.

In parks, seasonal upkeep continues at campsites and Spirit Square. The stage at Spirit Square is being replaced due to rot and crews will begin pathway repairs.

Roads staff are moving into winter readiness. Parts are on order for plows and spreaders, snow removal equipment is being prepped, and a new street sign for Ives alleyway is on the way along with blank signs to accommodate future alley road names.

Development enforcement remains active. The village has received complaints about ongoing industrial activity on a residential property. Another letter has been sent to the owner confirming a stop work order until required permits are in place, with the matter under legal review. A separate stop work order was issued for work in or near a creek and the file has been reported to the province for follow up. Staff also investigated concerns about a structure too close to a creek and vegetation removal in the channel. Enforcement options are being reviewed.

Engineering work continues on several fronts. Staff and Urban Systems have reviewed draft mapping and recommendations for the drainage study. For wastewater treatment, meetings with Urban Systems and committee members are ongoing, a geotechnical investigation is assessing several potential sites, and the marine outfall study is nearing completion.

The reservoir replacement project has completed geotechnical work. Engineering and design are underway, with a target to tender and start construction in spring 2026.

For the Tarundl Creek intake study, the village is awaiting confirmation from WSP on when it will present findings to council at a Committee of the Whole.
