After nine days on the run at Vancouver International Airport, Tommy the rescue dog is finally safe.
The 8-month-old pup had just arrived from Korea when he escaped from his crate at YVR and disappeared into one of the busiest and noisiest areas imaginable.
Parker and Julia from Petsearchers Canada were called in to help. After searching every corner of the airport, they eventually found Tommy hiding deep in the bushes near a busy road. A trap was set, but Tommy slipped away again, heading toward industrial zones and forested areas filled with traffic and coyotes.
“Cameras and traps were set,” Petsearchers wrote on Instagram. “Tommy cautiously checked one out, halfway in before backing out.” Then he vanished again.

During the search, an airport spokesperson said members of the operations team were “doing all they can” to help bring the missing dog home. “Operations will continue to stay in close contact with those involved as efforts to locate Tommy continue,” the spokesperson added.
Eventually, Petsearchers adjusted their search area and placed new bait and cameras. Tommy reappeared. This time, he walked fully into the trap. He was finally safe.
“TOMMY IS HOME SAFE AFTER 9 DAYS!” Petsearchers announced in all caps.
Back at the office, Tommy’s personality came through, “wagging his tail, giving kisses, and asking for scratches.” They described him as “a sweet, gentle soul.”
Thanks were extended to the RCMP, YVR staff, Wildlife Control, nearby industrial sites, and Karen McKay, who helped on-site with food and watch. Community members who shared sightings and posts also played a big part in Tommy’s safe return.
After a long and stressful nine days, Tommy’s journey ended with tail wags, cuddles, and a well-earned nap.
