The Tsunami Sirens showcased unrelenting spirit at the Queen’s Softball Tournament in Prince Rupert on Sept. 21 and 22.

Although the local ladies’ slo-pitch team didn’t secure a victory, they remained competitive throughout the weekend, battling both tough opponents and relentless rain.

The tournament began on Friday night with the Sirens facing Pitch Please in their first round-robin game.

After enduring a rough ferry crossing from Haida Gwaii, the team struggled to find their rhythm and fell 16-1.

On Saturday, they played two more round-robin games, first taking on the Ball Busters in a close match that ended 7-4 in favour of the opposition.

Later that day, the Kalum Tire Biters narrowly defeated the Sirens 4-1, capping off the round-robin portion of the tournament.

In the playoffs, the Sirens met Strike Force in their first elimination game. Despite best efforts, the game ended 16-4, sending the Sirens into a match against Cleats and Cleavage.

In an intense showdown that went into extra innings, the Sirens narrowly missed victory, falling 8-7 in what was undoubtedly their best performance of the tournament.

Erica Reid earned the title of Team MVP, while Rhea Botel was recognized as a team All-Star.

Team Captain Laina Bell reflected on the tournament, saying, “We brought a new team over this year and all the ladies played their hearts out. There were some close games, tough calls, and excellent plays.

“We’re excited to continue to grow as a team and come back next year,” she added. “Háw’aa to the organizers for setting it up and all the women who came out and played despite the conditions.”
