Police and major crime investigators remain on scene in Skidegate following the April 22 incident, continuing their investigation into the suspicious death.

Major crime investigators with North District RCMP arrived in Skidegate the same day a man was fatally struck by a vehicle and are actively working the case.

Staff Sgt. Kris Clark of the B.C. RCMP confirmed that North District Major Crime team continues to lead the investigation into the April 22 incident.

Clark confirmed RCMP believe the victim was targeted.

Pressed for more information, Clark told the Haida Gwaii News that he understands the concerns of the community, “and I want to reassure you that we are working quickly; however, investigations like this take time and we must be mindful to gather the necessary evidence to support a successful prosecution.

“With that in mind, no news from the RCMP does not mean a lack of progress, rather that we are simply preserving the integrity of the investigation. For privacy reasons, we cannot identify anyone who may be subject to an investigation until such time as charges have been laid.” Said Clark

Clark added that he will continue to liaise with the investigative team and share any updates he can as the investigation progresses.

Staff with Haida Gwaii News are also continuing to work on getting more information on the incident. Neither the RCMP, nor family, have officially released the identity of the victim.

Out of respect for the family and the RCMP investigation, Haida Gwaii News will not be publishing the name of the victim.

Names of those responsible will be published by Haida Gwaii News if and when their names are released by RCMP, or charges are sworn by the Crown.

The fatal incident occurred around 1:17p.m. in the 200 block of Front Street in Skidegate, when a vehicle reportedly struck a pedestrian. The man later died from his injuries.

The Daajing Giids RCMP remain on scene and in the area.

Later the same day, the Village of Skidegate passed an emergency resolution enacting a 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew. The curfew will remain in place until rescinded by the Skidegate Band Council.

Anyone with information, including CCTV or dash camera footage, is asked to contact the Daajing Giids RCMP at 250-559-4421.
