Twenty-nine local golfers gathered at The Willows Golf Course on Sept. 7 and 8 in Sandspit for the annual Hekate Cup; a relatively new but fast-growing tradition in Haida Gwaii’s golf community. Open to golfers of all levels, the tournament has quickly become a highlight of the local sports calendar, offering participants the chance to compete for local bragging rights.
Saturday’s matches laid the groundwork for an exciting and competitive weekend as Team Dupe and Team Jones locked horns in a series of closely contested battles. After 13 matches, the teams were dead even at 6.5 points apiece. With each match worth one point and ties splitting the points in half, the balance of victories—five each—highlighted just how evenly matched both sides were. The three matches that ended in ties only further underscored the competitive tension that filled the day.
On Sunday morning, the momentum shifted. Team Dupe came out strong, winning three of the five early matches and establishing a narrow lead of 12.5 to 10.5. With the tournament inching toward its final Stoke play round, it seemed as if Team Dupe had seized control and was on the path to victory.
But in a dramatic twist, Team Jones mounted a stunning comeback. Displaying grit and determination, they surged back, winning 8 of the 13 Stoke play matches, each now worth two points.
The final phase of the tournament was intense, with pressure mounting on both sides. While three of the matches ended in draws, Team Jones’s dominant play in the decisive moments allowed them to clinch a narrow but definitive victory. The final score saw Team Jones triumph with 25.5 points over Team Dupe’s 22.5.
As the sun set on another unforgettable weekend of golf at The Willows Golf Course, the Hekate Cup once again cemented itself as a favourite tournament among local golfers.
