Two young martial artists from Haida Gwaii stepped confidently onto the mats in Coquitlam on April 5, representing their island and gym with heart, discipline, and sportsmanship.
Reianna Diaz and Daala Clark, both students of Diaz Combat Sports (DCS) Masset, participated in a youth sparring event hosted by INFIGHT Martial Arts. The event welcomed martial artists aged six to 13 from across the Lower Mainland for a day of safe, structured sparring designed to promote learning, not competition.
“The weekend event at INFIGHT Martial Arts in Coquitlam went really well,” said Jamie Diaz, speaking on behalf of DCS Masset. “Our two Haida Gwaii fighters had an incredible experience — participating in multiple rounds of safe, controlled sparring with students from various schools across the Lower Mainland.
“It was a fantastic opportunity for them to gain exposure, develop their skills, and connect with the broader martial arts community.”
Sparring formats included 60-second practice rounds, group drills, and optional longer competitive matches. Throughout the day, Reianna and Daala showed adaptability, focus, and strong technical skills in each round.
“Both athletes represented DCS and Haida Gwaii with heart, focus and great sportsmanship,” Diaz said. “We’re so proud of their effort and the way they carried themselves throughout the day.”
The event offered not only a chance to grow as martial artists but also to make connections with other young athletes and instructors. It marked an important milestone for the students and reflected the growing presence of martial arts on Haida Gwaii.
As their journey continues, both athletes are already looking ahead to future opportunities—to keep training, sparring, and inspiring others back home.
