Election Highlights: Council of the Haida Nation 2024

    Council of Haida Nation

    The results are in for the 2024 Council of the Haida Nation election, and Jason Alsop (Gaagwiis) has been re-elected as President, securing 61.4% of the votes. Gaagwiis garnered 625 votes, defeating challenger Owen Jones (Hltaaxwii), who received 393 votes for a solid 38.6% of the total.

    The Vice Presidency saw a decisive victory for Stephen (Buck) Grosse, who claimed 73.6% of the votes with 746 ballots, surpassing J. Kim Goetzinger, who earned 268 votes (26.4%). Grosse’s win underscores strong community support for his vision and leadership.


    Regional Representatives

    Gaw Region

    Voters in the Gaw region elected a strong slate of representatives to advocate for local concerns:

    • Lisa Diane Hageman – 236 votes
    • Ross John Parnell – 216 votes
    • Tarah Samuels – 265 votes
    • Erika Stocker – 261 votes

    Other candidates, including Cynthia Anne Samuels (212 votes) and Adeana Young (172 votes), did not secure seats this term.

    HiGaagilda Region

    In the HiGaagilda region, all four representatives were elected by acclamation:

    • Laura (Goox) Beaton
    • Desi Collinson
    • Shawn Cowper
    • Randy Pryce

    This reflects a united front and community confidence in these representatives moving forward.

    T’agwan Region

    The T’agwan region saw notable competition, with two candidates emerging victorious:

    • Deborah Bell – 33 votes
    • Tasha Samuels – 57 votes

    Other candidates, including Albert Eppinga (12 votes), Gallon Stanley (1 vote), Isaac Hill (13 votes), David J. Parnell (16 votes), and others, fell short in the tight race.
