The bats were hot and the barbecues smoking as 24 teams rolled into Telkwa for the annual BBQ Slo-Pitch Tournament, held Friday, August 29 through Monday, September 1. Split between two divisions, the tournament featured some of the north’s toughest ball and plenty of late-summer drama.
Haida Gwaii was represented on both sides of the draw. The Grinders went straight into the A division, facing off against top-flight competition, while the SOP’s took their swings in the B bracket.
The Grinders opened strong, pounding the Spartans 15-3 on Saturday, then rolling past the Chestnuts 17-4 before edging RDM 12-7 in round-robin play. They carried momentum into Sunday with a hard-fought 15-13 win over the Big Dawgs. But when the bracket tightened, so did the bats. The Spartans returned the favour with a decisive win, and the Amigos kept the door shut, eliminating the Grinders after back-to-back losses.
The SOP’s, meanwhile, lit up their side of the field. They opened Saturday with a 23-1 thrashing of the Silver Bullets. On Sunday, they kept piling on, hammering the Renegades 18-3 and then shutting down the Guardians 14-2 to grab the top seed in their division.
Playoff Monday was more of the same. The SOP’s handled the Guardians again, 17-3, then mercy-ruled Grassy Bay 15-0 to punch their ticket to the finals. In a back-and-forth championship against the Flyers, the SOP’s kept the bats alive when it counted, pulling ahead late and sealing an 18-14 victory to capture the B division title.
For the SOP’s, it was a run built on pure offence: five wins, triple-digit runs scored, and not a single opponent able to slow them down. For the Grinders, the weekend was a reminder of the razor-thin margins in the A division, where one swing can end a hot streak.
