Northern Adapted Sports Rolls Through Haida Gwaii for Wheelchair Basketball Week

Haida Gwaii residents got a fast-paced taste of wheelchair basketball during two community sessions hosted by the Northern Adapted Sports Association in September.

The first stop took place in Masset on September 23 as part of Wheelchair Basketball Week, a nationwide initiative encouraging Canadians of all abilities to get active and connect through sport. The gym was full of smiles, laughter, and friendly competition as locals tried their hand at maneuvering the chairs and shooting from a new perspective.

Two nights later, on September 25, the team rolled into Daajing Giids for a session at G.M. Dawson Secondary. Players described the evening as a “race to see who could have more fun,” capped off by a last-second basket and plenty of cheers.

The events were designed to show how inclusive and accessible wheelchair basketball can be—and how much fun it is for everyone, whether or not they have a disability.

Northern Adapted Sports says the group hopes to return to Haida Gwaii in April to visit schools and host another round of community sessions. The organization is also recruiting youth ages 12 to 20 for the upcoming BC Winter Games in February 2026. Participation is open to everyone, regardless of physical ability.

Wheelchair Basketball Week is supported by Wheelchair Basketball Canada and partners across the country to promote inclusion, fitness, and community connection through sport.
