Haida Gwaii to host World Cup events with provincial funding

Communities across Haida Gwaii will host local celebrations during the 2026 FIFA World Cup after receiving support through a new provincial funding program.

The Province of British Columbia has announced $1.7 million in one-time funding for 32 communities, regional districts and First Nations to host free public events tied to the tournament.

Haida Gwaii is among the recipients, with events planned in Daajing Giids, Masset, Old Massett and Skidegate.

The funding comes through the 2026 Community Event Support Fund and is intended to bring the World Cup experience to communities outside host cities. Events may include live public match viewings, soccer-themed activities, cultural performances and local food offerings.

According to the province, the funding can be used for planning, promotion and delivery of events, including costs such as performers, security, viewing screens and communications.

The FIFA World Cup is scheduled to run from June 11 to July 19, 2026, with community events expected throughout that period.

British Columbia is set to host several tournament matches in Vancouver, one of the Canadian host cities alongside Toronto, as part of a World Cup jointly hosted by Canada, the United States and Mexico. Provincial officials say the broader goal is to extend the economic and social benefits of the tournament to smaller and remote communities.

For Haida Gwaii residents, the events offer a chance to take part in the World Cup without the cost and logistics of travelling off-island, while also creating space for local groups, performers and vendors to be involved.

The province says the funding is also intended to support tourism and local economic activity during the tournament period, particularly in communities that rely on seasonal visitors. Public viewing events are expected to draw both residents and visitors, depending on scheduling and location.

Local organizers are expected to work with community partners to finalize event plans, including venues, equipment needs and programming. Details such as match schedules, time zone considerations and broadcast availability will also shape how events are delivered in each community.

More details on Haida Gwaii events, including locations and schedules, are expected to be announced closer to the tournament.
