Islanders fall short on ice, cleans up at the drive-thru

The Haida Gwaii Islanders hit the ice in Terrace for the annual Buck & Doe co-ed hockey tournament on October 18 and 19, playing four games and enjoying every minute — even without a win on the board.

The weekend event brought together mixed men’s and women’s teams from across the northwest for two days of light-hearted but competitive hockey. The Haida Gwaii group played four games, losing them all, but left with plenty of smiles and stories to take home.

Each game, the team picked an All-Star for their effort and sportsmanship.

Game one: Ava Starr of Hazelton, who joined the Haida Gwaii team for the weekend.

Game two: Daneeka Alexander of Terrace, who also suited up with the island crew.

Game three: Michael Allen of Port Clements, who held his own in net with a strong showing between the pipes.

Game four: Louis Bissonette of Terrace, who rounded out the weekend with solid play and hustle.

While the results didn’t go their way, the tournament was full of good energy, new connections, and plenty of laughs on and off the ice. The trip also gave the island crew a rare chance to visit the “real world” — stock up on supplies, hit a few shops, grab some Timmies, and maybe even sneak in a Big Mac or two before heading back across the water.
