Masset RCMP's investigation into suspected drug trafficking in Masset and Old Masset remains active, but it could be up to a year before police submit charges for approval.
In response to questions from Haida Gwaii News, Cpl. Jennifer Cooper, North District RCMP media relations officer, said police must await results from the National Laboratory before forwarding charges to the Public Prosecution Service of Canada. Laboratory processing can take up to a year.
Police also will not publicly confirm the identity of the suspected drugs before charges are approved.
The investigation began in May and focused on suspected trafficking at residences in the 1500-block of Burgess Avenue in Masset and the 100-block of Raven Avenue in Old Masset.
On Oct. 3, officers searched both properties, seizing more than 200 grams of suspected cocaine, approximately $11,000 in cash, drug trafficking paraphernalia and a vehicle believed to be connected to the investigation.
One man was arrested and later released. No charges have been announced.
The North District Emergency Response Team assisted with the searches. Cooper said Masset's nine-officer detachment needed additional resources to search multiple locations in a short period. The team's specialized equipment and training also helped protect officers and the public.
Police would not say how the investigation began, whether it involves a wider trafficking operation or whether additional arrests are anticipated.
Cooper said releasing further details could compromise the ongoing investigation.
Asked about community support, she said detachment commander Sgt. Jeff Lance maintains communication with community leaders, addressing concerns and providing updates when it is safe and appropriate.
Police have not indicated when the investigation will conclude or whether charges will ultimately be approved.
