With B.C. voters unexpectedly heading back to the polls this fall, the candidate field in North Coast–Haida Gwaii is still taking shape.
As of Sept. 24, former MLA Laanas – Tamara Davidson is the only publicly confirmed candidate Haida Gwaii News has been able to identify in the riding.
Davidson is running for the BC NDP after first winning the North Coast–Haida Gwaii seat in the 2024 provincial election. She served as Minister of Environment and Parks until the legislature was dissolved Sept. 22 for the 2026 election.
So far, Haida Gwaii News has not been able to confirm candidates for the Conservative Party of B.C., BC Green Party or any independent candidates in the riding.
That could change quickly.
Candidate nominations remain open until 1 p.m. Oct. 3. Elections BC notes that its official online candidate list only includes candidates after their completed nomination paperwork has been accepted, meaning people may publicly announce their intention to run before appearing on the provincial list.
The riding had only two candidates in the 2024 election. Davidson, running for the BC NDP, received 4,863 votes, or 64.9 per cent, while Conservative candidate Christopher Sankey received 2,628 votes, or 35.1 per cent.
Haida Gwaii News has not found an announcement indicating Sankey will run again in 2026.
The North Coast–Haida Gwaii riding includes Haida Gwaii, Prince Rupert, Port Edward, the Central Coast and a number of smaller coastal communities.
Haida Gwaii News will update the candidate list as additional candidates are announced or registered with Elections BC.
