Haida Gwaii voters will head to the polls Oct. 17 for the 2026 general local election, but not every position will appear on a ballot.

Some races have already been decided by acclamation, while voters in Masset, Port Clements and Daajing Giids will choose municipal councillors, with contested mayoral races in Port Clements and Daajing Giids. Three of the five Haida Gwaii School District trustee areas will also go to a vote.

Here is the breakdown, as of Sept. 24.

Masset

There will be no vote for mayor in Masset this election.

Barry Pages was the only candidate for mayor and has been elected by acclamation.

There are eight candidates running for four council seats:

  • Jody Grange

  • Bret Johnston

  • Martin Lewis

  • Robert Morton

  • Susan Musgrave

  • Peter Sloan

  • Kate Stichbury

Port Clements

Port Clements has the biggest municipal field on Haida Gwaii this election.

There are three candidates for mayor:

Scott Cabianca, Kazamir Falconbridge and Rob Kidd.

There are 11 candidates for four council seats:

Jasmine Beachy, Amber Bellis, Brigid Cumming, Doris Fischer, Norman Gould, Derek Hardt, Sarah Hunt, Dale Lore, Wayne Nicol, Dennis Reindl and Betty Stewart.

Daajing Giids

Daajing Giids voters will choose both a mayor and four councillors.

The two candidates for mayor are:

Jim LeMottee and Kris Olsen.

There are six candidates for four council seats:

Bill Beamish, Kim Claggett, Alanah Mountifield, Lisa Pineault, Jennifer Rutt and Hayl Zacks.

Haida Gwaii School District

School District 50 has five trustee positions, with one trustee representing each electoral area. Two have already been decided because only one candidate came forward, while three areas have contested races.

Area 1 – Old Massett: Wilson Brown has been elected by acclamation.

Area 2 – North: Ashley Currie and Tammy Gates are running.

Area 3 – Central: Jam Clark, Jennifer Jury, Megan Moncrieff and Kim Nickel are running.

Area 4 – Skidegate: Dana Moraes has been elected by acclamation.

Area 5 – South: Miranda Post, Lindsay Seegmiller and Meggan Wood are running.

North Coast Regional District

Haida Gwaii’s two directly elected North Coast Regional District positions have both been decided by acclamation.

Electoral Area D – Rural Graham Island: Johanne Young has been re-elected by acclamation.

Electoral Area E – Moresby Island/Sandspit: Evan Putterill has been re-elected by acclamation.
